Visiting Saint Nicholas Church in Tarpon Springs

📍 36 N Pinellas Ave, Tarpon Springs, FL 34689

Visiting St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Tarpon Springs felt like a little trip back to Cyprus, a place I dearly miss. The cathedral is truly grand and majestic, but what struck me most was that it doesn’t feel cold or clinical like some modern churches can. Instead, it radiates a sense of sacredness that you can feel as soon as you step inside.

Architecturally, it’s a stunning example of Neo-Byzantine design, crafted by Eugene Brothers from Chicago. The soaring dome, the intricate details, every inch tells a story. Speaking of the dome, encircling it is 23 stained glass windows crafted by Joseph V. Llorens in Atlanta. They each depict scenes from the life of Jesus and various saints, and I love how they flood the space with colourful light, adding to the cathedral’s ethereal atmosphere.

One of the most unique things about this cathedral is the relic it holds. A piece of St. Nicholas himself. On his feast day, the relic is carried around the perimeter of the church in a deeply moving procession, connecting the faithful with centuries of tradition.

And if that wasn’t enough, the cathedral is home to the famous Weeping Icon of St. Nicholas. Back in December 1970, a woman cleaning the church noticed tears forming around the eyes of the icon, which is kept safely sealed in glass. Over days and years, these miraculous tears appeared repeatedly, leaving the community in awe.

This cathedral is more than just a place of worship, it stands as a beloved landmark and a jewel of Tarpon Springs and the wider Tampa Bay area. I'm so glad I got to visit!
